COUNTY OF ORANGE, WHICH WAS CONSIDERED BY THE BOARD ON MAY 21, 2024, AS SCS-3, THE LITIGANTS HAVE REPORTEDLY AGREED TO SETTLE.IN THIS TRAGIC CASE, A JUVENILE DEPENDENT, A 3.5 MONTH OLD BABY GIRL, HAD BEEN PLACED IN THE CARE OF HER PATERNAL GRANDMOTHER ON AN EMERGENCY BASIS BY THE SOCIAL SERVICES AGENCY.WHILE IN THE CARE OF HER PATERNAL GRANDMOTHER, THE BABY SUFFERED ASPHYXIATION IN HER CRIB, WHICH RESULTED IN SIGNIFICANT BRAIN DAMAGE AND THE LOSS OF BODILY FUNCTIONS.THE BOARD ON MAY 21, 2024, HAD UNANIMOUSLY AGREED TO ALLOCATE $5 MILLION, THE AMOUNT OF THE COUNTY'S SELF-INSURED RETENTION, TOWARDS SETTLEMENT, THE BALANCE OF WHICH, APPROXIMATELY $23 MILLION, WILL NOW BE COVERED BY THE COUNTY'S EXTERNAL INSURANCE CARRIER.WHEN THE SETTLEMENT IS FINALIZED, COPIES OF THE AGREEMENT SHALL BE MADE AVAILABLE THROUGH THE OFFICE OF CEO RISK MANAGEMENT TO ANY PERSON WHO INQUIRES.
