RECOMMENDED ACTION(S):

Authorize OC Community Resources Director or designee to accept funding award in the amount of $4,500 from the Califa Group nonprofit corporation for Stay & Play library program training and supplies.

SUMMARY:

Accepting the funding award from Califa Group will allow OC Public Libraries patrons access to programming designed specifically for informal caregivers, helping them learn, develop relationships and build connections to their library and community resources.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The Stay & Play library program builds on the early learning foundations and best practices promoted, for more than a decade, by the California State Library’s Early Learning with Families initiative — a statewide initiative that supports the continued evolution of library services to young children, their families and caregivers.

Stay & Play is a library service model that positions libraries to support and engage informal caregivers and the children in their care. Stay & Play includes programming designed specifically for informal caregivers — helping them learn, develop relationships and build connections to their library and community resources.

Califa Group is a nonprofit public benefit corporation library membership consortium of more than 200 libraries and is one of the largest library networks in California. Califa Group works with the California State Library in administering various library programs.

OC Public Libraries (OCPL) was invited to apply to join existing Stay & Play libraries throughout California for an exciting opportunity to enhance their knowledge, join and grow a community of practice and build programs for informal caregivers and the children in their care.

If funding is accepted, OCPL will receive $4,500 towards Stay & Play program expenses at the Tustin Library and take part in substantial relevant professional development. Professional development trainings for the two OCPL librarians participating in the Stay & Play training include child development webinars on social and emotional learning, detailed virtual workshops providing strategies for planning inclusive family story times, and web-based online courses to help acquaint the librarians with foundations of early literacy. The participating librarians will utilize the skills and knowledge they receive from the trainings to implement a pilot Stay & Play program at the Tustin Library and then work with other OCPL staff to expand the Stay & Play programming model to other OCPL branches.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

Revenue from this funding award will be absorbed in OCPL Fund 120 FY 2023-24 Budget.
