RECOMMENDED ACTION(S):
Authorize OC Public Libraries to accept a donation in the amount of $26,000 from the OC Public Libraries Foundation to offset the cost of the Literary Orange event.
SUMMARY:
Authorization to accept the donation from the OC Public Libraries Foundation will help offset the cost of the 2019 Literary Orange event hosted by OC Public Libraries.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The OC Public Libraries Foundation (Foundation) is a nonprofit organization that holds fundraisers and solicits donations to provide funding, reading material and program support for the OC Public Libraries system. The Foundation has offered to provide financial support for the 2019 Literary Orange event which was held on Saturday, April 6, 2019, in Newport Beach. On June 26, 2018, the Board of Supervisors authorized OC Public Libraries to receive a donation for the 2018 Literary Orange event.
Since 2007, OC Public Libraries has hosted the Literary Orange event, which is Orange County's premier literary event aimed at uniting authors, readers and libraries in a celebration of literature. The 2019 Literary Orange event included bestselling authors Tara Conklin, Martha Hall-Kelly and Alan Brennert as keynote speakers. The event was attended by an estimated 500 attendees who participated in various break-out sessions with authors and enjoyed opportunities for autographs, lunch and refreshments. Most, but not all, of the cost of the event was covered by ticket sales for the event. The remaining costs were covered by OC Public Libraries.
Accepting the donation in the amount of $26,000 from the Foundation will offset the cost of the 2019 Literary Orange event.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
Revenue from this donation will be absorbed in the Budget Control/Fund 120 FY 2018-19 Budget.
