RECOMMENDED
ACTION(S):
Receive
and file the 2024 Orange County Annual Crop Report.
SUMMARY:
Receiving and filing the 2024
Orange County Annual Crop Report is necessary to showcase the economic
contributions of Orange County's agricultural sector, address challenges
impacting local production and support compliance with the California Food and
Agricultural Code.
BACKGROUND
INFORMATION:
Pursuant to Sections 2272 and 2279
of the California Food and Agricultural Code, the Orange County Agricultural
Commissioner has prepared the 2024 Orange County Annual Crop Report (Report).
The Report provides a comprehensive overview of Orange County’s agricultural
industry, including acreage, production, crop valuation and pest management
activities. On February 25, 2025, the Board of Supervisors received and filed
the 2023 Report.
In 2024, Orange County’s
agriculture demonstrated resilience in the face of rising labor costs, a
reduction in available production sites and invasive pest quarantines. Despite
these challenges, the nursery industry maintained its position as the county’s
leading agricultural sector, contributing more than 51 percent of total
agricultural value.
High-value crops suited for
intensive cultivation also performed strongly. Strawberry production was a
notable success, with its overall value more than doubling from previous years,
a result of both increased yields and steady consumer demand.
In addition to highlighting the
accomplishments of Orange County’s agricultural sector, the 2024 Report also
showcases the vital contributions of the Orange County Weights and Measures
unit. This unit plays a critical role by ensuring accuracy and fairness of
products sold by weight, volume, length or count across the marketplace. The
Report highlights five of the unit’s core programs, underscoring its importance
not only to agriculture but also to the daily transactions that sustain Orange
County’s economy and protect consumers.
Compliance
with CEQA: This
action is not a project within the meaning of CEQA Guidelines Section 15378 and
is therefore not subject to CEQA, since it does not have the potential for
resulting in either a direct physical change in the environment, or a
reasonably foreseeable indirect physical change in the environment. The
approval of this agenda item does not commit the County to a definite course of
action in regard to a project since it is a report on the economic
contributions of the County’s agricultural sector. This proposed activity is
therefore not subject to CEQA. Any future action connected to this approval
that constitutes a project will be reviewed for compliance with CEQA.
